A Note From Jackie

I hope you are joyfully getting in gear for the most wonderful time of the year! It's a very busy time for most, and I hope that you will find plenty of time to enjoy the season, reflect, give thanks, and create amazing memories for you and your loved ones. Try not to stress too much!

Be sure to read the article included in this month's newsletter: 5 Helpful Healthy Tips to Fight Holiday Stress - It's written by team member Alice, a naturopathic doctor and amazing massage therapist. I think you'll find it extremely helpful!

As we reflect, we are so very grateful for you as we celebrate our 14th anniversary this month! Over the years, we have had the opportunity to meet and get to know so many amazing people!

One very special guest in particular I would like to tell you about is Dock Reams Farthing. Dock has been a guest with Karen for manicures and pedicures since we opened in our first location at Merrimac Court almost 14 years ago! He is now 103 years young and still enjoying his visits to the spa! He has 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He retired from the government, having spent his career with the Small Business Administration (Yay, Dock)! His granddaughter, Sherrie, now his caregiver (who also happens to be one of our fabulous spa coordinators) describes him as "a man of few words, always dressed to the nines, and always taking good care of himself." He also enjoys traveling, and one of his most favorable excursions was a cruise through Alaska. By the way, he will be 104 on February 6th, 2016 - the same birthday as President Reagan.

To Dock and his entire family...we send our sincere appreciation and honor. Words alone cannot describe how thankful we are. Thank you so very much! !

"Just left after an amazing facial. I'd give you the estheticians name but then she will book up. The waiting room is relaxing and has different drinks and snacks. I've been to quite a few spas and never had that many options. They offer a heated pillow for your neck after your treatment and while you are getting a mani/pedi. The staff is extremely polite and you can understand them (a treat). Can't wait to go back."

"You will not go here and say "I wish there was..." they have every amenity you could want. From amazing spa waters to coffee to snacks and more! Top of the line services. Heather is my savior!! I've had my nails done with Karen and she's fabulous too. I guarantee you will love this place every time you go. I've been going for 7 years now and never had anything less than exceptional service from the moment I walk in to when I step out. Huge fan."

Lemon-Raspberry Muffins
A festive holiday treat!
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup nonfat buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white whole-wheat flour, or whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen (not thawed) raspberries

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat 12 large (1/2-cup) muffin cups with cooking spray or line with paper liners.
  2. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the zest from the lemon in long strips. Combine the zest and sugar in a food processor; pulse until the zest is very finely chopped into the sugar. Add buttermilk, oil, egg and vanilla and pulse until blended.
  3. Combine whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Add the buttermilk mixture and fold until almost blended. Gently fold in raspberries. Divide the batter among the muffin cups.
  4. Bake the muffins until the edges and tops are golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack. Serve warm.
